Umunthu Art
We make contemporary Southern African art accessible as digital downloads, so artists can reach people who want their work on the wall, and so more of that value can flow back to the people who make it.
How it started
The idea came to us while travelling through Africa. We met Israel, saw his amazing artworks, and realised we could support him and other artists by making their art accessible. Not locked away in one room or one city, but available to people who want to live with it.
So we purchased the artwork, digitised it, and got his consent to sell it online. That first step became Umunthu Art: a place to buy high-resolution files you can print at home or with a studio, at the size that fits your wall.
Breaking the cycle
Our goal is to help struggling artists break the cycle. Many talented people create extraordinary work without an easy path to buyers beyond their immediate community. We use our resources to help them get the financial boost they deserve: buying work fairly, preparing digital editions with care, and selling online with their consent.
That ties into our wider mission of breaking the cycle of poverty. Access to markets, fair payment, and a platform that grows with new voices are part of how we want to show up.
Ukhanyo Foundation
We also use proceeds to support the Ukhanyo Foundation, a Cape Town nonprofit supporting young people through education and mentorship. This is not a distant donation line item. It is a charity we work with, both with our time and with money.

Eastern Cape, South Africa
Working from the Eastern Cape, Israel paints with a palette knife, not a brush. His wildlife and portraiture arrive through bold edges, layered colour, and a presence that holds in quiet interiors.
Meeting Israel is what set this whole project in motion. His wildlife and portraiture showed us what becomes possible when strong work meets a wider audience. We are proud to feature him first, with his consent, as the collection that launched Umunthu Art.
More artists ahead
We plan to feature more artists as the platform grows and we meet more people with a story. Each time, the same principles hold: buy the work fairly, digitise it carefully, sell only with consent, and keep the focus on access and fair return for the maker.
